On May 15th our guest speaker was Steven Bouris. Steven was born with a rare hairy nevus (birthmark) on his forehead and in childhood he felt different and alone. People would stare at his birthmark, giving him a sense of shame. Eventually, he confronted this shame with family and friends, only to realise that these concerns were internal and unfounded. He spoke to us about his journey from childhood to depression, PTSD and anxiety in adulthood, and finally the road to emotional resilience.
A keynote speaker and author, Steven also spoke about his trip to the Nevus Outreach Shine Conference in St. Louis, USA. The conference, held in a different US city each year, brings together individuals with nevi, their families, and healthcare professionals for education, support, and community.
Steven’s plan for an Australian non-profit are currently in the works, with a launch date set for next month. Steven also has an upcoming launch for his book ‘Different: From Trauma to Triumph’.
