Lit up in purple for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Blog, Club, Community

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a global reminder of our shared responsibility to support and protect older adults.

Elder abuse—whether physical, emotional, financial, or through neglect—is a growing concern worldwide. As populations age, millions of older individuals face mistreatment, often by those closest to them. This abuse can go unnoticed, hidden behind closed doors, or dismissed as a private matter.

WEAAD shines a spotlight on this often-overlooked issue, encouraging communities, families, and governments to recognise the signs of elder abuse and take meaningful action. It’s not just about raising awareness—it’s about fostering respect, dignity, and safety for all older adults.

Members of the Pascoe Vale Rotary Club assembled at Coles Fountain in the Parliament Gardens, which was lit up in purple for WEAAD. There, they met Melbourne City Councillor Dr Olivia Ball for a chat and some photos.

In the words of Pascoe Vale Rotarian Sara Murdock, recently awarded the Victorian Pharmacist of the Year Award:

“Tonight we lit up purple in support of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, standing proudly with Pascoe Vale Rotary and our community to shine a light on an issue that affects far too many. It was an honour to stand beside passionate locals who believe in dignity, protection and respect for our elders. Every voice matters, and when we come together, we can spark the change needed to build a safer, more compassionate society for all generations.”
